Portugal: The fourth safest country in the world

Moving to a foreign country can be an overwhelming decision to make, especially when deciding on the right country for you and your family. From job opportunities to healthcare, safety is one of the top priorities when considering immigration. Finding a place where you have peace of mind for your children and their futures are of utmost importance. According to the Global Peace Index, the majority of the top 25 safest countries are within Europe, and Portugal is ranked in fourth place.

From a total of 163 countries, there were 23 different factors that determined how safe a country is. These included political stability, number of homicides and military expenditures as a percentage of GDP. Having been listed as the fourth safest country in the world, Portugal has several aspects that have contributed to this accomplishment. Some of these include the increased armed police presence, the stable political climate and decrease of unemployment from 17% to under 7% over the last 6 years. The country also ranked fourth in the Annual Global Retirement Index thanks to the safety conditions, healthcare and transportation systems.

Over the last 5 years, Portugal has remained in the top 5 safest countries on the Global Peace Index. “Portugal registered, in 2020, the lowest crime indicators since the current registration model existed, more than 30 years ago. And it is important to remember that this was achieved in a year as difficult as this the pandemic that, in many countries, contributed to the increase in conflicts and to the increase of some forms of crime. It should be noted that, in 2014, Portugal occupied 18th place, having been climbing the table in recent years.” explains Eduardo Cabrita, Former Minister Assistant in Portugal’s cabinet.
